Great Disaster Turning Into Great Joy…

Some of you know that Janet and I were High School Sweethearts, separated by 3 decades of stupidity. When school was over, on the East Coast of the US, she stayed and went to nursing school and I went on to the University of Colorado, leaving behind the love of my life for what I thought was the right thing to do…

Like everyone in the 60’s/70’s, we hung with a good sized group of friends, we didn’t have social media, so we actually hung out together, a lot… So she got tired of waiting, especially as I said I wasn’t coming back, and married another of our “group” of friends Rick… Back then, we were in the middle of the Vietnam war, and I was very involved in protesting against it. So I was not very well liked by either my own parents or Janet’s. Rick however, enlisted in the AirForce, and was everyone’s favourite son…

So, we roll the clock ahead 3 decades, and a lot of kids and relationships later, Rick announces he is coming out of the closet, and dives off to marry the love of his life Jose… The personal devastation was unimaginable…
It’s taken 10 years to get past it, but last year we had Rick and Jose to Thanksgiving dinner, and we really had an excellent time…

And this year, due to some freak circumstances, we ended up having the full Christmas dinner, with almost the whole family, at Rick and Jose’s house in Ohio. The pics are just a small sample of the evening… But the really most amazing part was the amount of love and affection shared by all. It just didn’t matter that Rick and Jose are gay, it didn’t matter what water had gone under the bridge, the only thing that mattered was the love and hope we have going forward…

Fortunately we now live in a country that views gays quite differently from our homeland. I can only appeal to my American friends to let some gay friends into your life, let them love you, and love them back, some of them are the greatest people you will ever meet… I can’t recommend the “coming out process” to anyone, but once it’s over, just learn to live with it, get over it… They are not the enemy…

Of the 55 Christmas dinners I can remember, this one was the best…

Steaming across midAmerica

Pressing across the Middle of America…

For the first time in over 5 years we are getting the real dose of “Merica”… The center of the USA might as well be a different country, they just call it “Merica”… Started out in Chicago where my mother lives, and then on to Indiana and now Ohio. Loads of in-laws, out-laws, and what-laws? You just forget how big it all is, the roads, the cars, the meals, the people, everything…

What a great end to the year, and start of the new one. Right out of the blocks is the start to the election. The actual formal campaigning doesn’t start until March, but the launch of all the components of the campaign start pretty quick…

I’ll be focusing here on what I call the why and how of British local politics. Not so much what happens, but how and why… We are quite fortunate to be in Surrey Heath, as we are quite a bit more organised than the others. Most of our selections are out of the way for who’s standing in which wards, and now we need to set about the task of winning and keeping up the momentum of all the great work we have done in the last 4-5 years…

Have a blessed New Year…
